Working Holiday Program, Winter/Spring 2016

MAY 2016

Working Holiday Living Room
Dunbar Salmonberry Days
Dunbar Community Centre, 4747 Dunbar St.

For the Working Holiday grand finale, artists Leah Weinstein, Jaspal Marwah and Elisa Yon will present temporary art installations, artist workshops and a philosopher’s coffee bar in the lobby of the Dunbar Community Centre during the month of May. These final projects will invite community members to celebrate Salmonberry Days and welcome summer. FREE.

Social Fabric Celebration

Please join us for an open-knitting social on Saturday May 14th in the lobby of the Dunbar Community Centre to celebrate the completion of the Social Fabric textile project. This event will coincide with Elisa Yon’s Working Holiday Coffee Bar, also in the lobby of the Dunbar Centre, and is part of the larger Salmonberry Days Festival.

Working Holiday Dunbar Chronicles

Artist Jaspal Marwah is collecting stories related to travel from Dunbar residents. The stories will be used to create theatrical pieces and performed during the Salmonberry Days Festival in May 2016. If you have a story to share, or want to volunteer in some other way, e-mail Jaspal at: dunbarchronicles@gmail.com.

Starting point: The Coffee Bar in Dunbar Community Centre – pick up a map, and take yourself on a short walk.
Time: Can be as long or short as you like – from 5 min to about 1 hour.

Dunbar’s Little Free Library

Since September 2015, the Little Free Library has been a popular addition to the community centre lobby. Everyone is invited to come and browse the ever-changing collection – see a book you like? Take it home with you, or donate a book on your next visit.

Working Holiday Chess Installation
With the warmer weather, why not get some fresh air  and play some outdoor chess with neighbours and friends. Located in Memorial West Park, near the south entrance of the community centre. FREE.

Artist Leah Weinstein will host a series of knitting workshops as part of a socially engaged textile project. Beginners and experienced knitters are invited to learn and share knitting skills with each other. All skill levels are welcome. Together, participants will make stripes to be stitched together and made into a “knit painting”. The completed textile piece will be on display at the community centre from April onwards. Materials will be provided and yarn donations are welcome. FREE. Registration required.

Beeswax Lip Balm & Hand Salve Workshop

Spring is coming and winter has been harsh on your skin, so “bee” good to yourself and come join guest artist Cameron Cartiere and bee-master Brian Campbell from the chART Oak Park Fieldhouse for an evening of natural DIY cosmetology. To celebrate the Lunar New Year, please join artist Elisa Yon, and special guest Zoe Lam, PhD Candidate in Linguistics, UBC, for an open house and hands-on workshop to demystify the origins of this tasty treat and make homemade fortune cookies with your very own wisdom texts. FREE.

Working Space hosts “25,000 Tuques”
(Located underneath the stair in the main lobby)

During February and March the Working Space will host “25,000 Tuques” (a national grassroots project supporting Syrian Refugees arriving in Canada). Dunbarites are invited to donate handmade tuques and yarn, to help welcome Syrian refugees in Canada.

Working Holiday Still Life Food Harvest
Dunbar Harvest Festival

Please bring a non-perishable food item and contribute to the pop-up art installation still life and food drive for the Greater Vancouver Food Bank Society. Over the course of the festival, artist Elisa Yon will aim to recreate a Dutch still-life painting by Adiaen van Utrecht, Banquet Still Life, 1644. Drop by with your dog to be immortalized in a still life photo. FREE

Working Holiday Outdoor Chess Play LAUNCH

Artist Leah Weinstein invites the community to Memorial West Park for the launch of the outdoor chess installation. The chessboard measures approximately 12×12 feet in size and is made from pieces of mats and rugs inserted into the lawn. The chess piece sculptures are constructed from locally gathered materials, made with the help of community members. Visitors of all ages are invited to play. FREE

Working Holiday Fermentations

This workshop will be led by artist Elisa Yon and Chef and Holistic Nutritionist, Andrea Potter. Through hands-on instruction, participants will learn about the art, science, and nutrition of lacto-fermented foods while creating a limited edition set of delicious cabbage inspired ferments. This workshop will be offered as part of this year’s Vancouver Sustenance Festival. sustenancefestival.ca. $5 FEE. Registration required.

Working Holiday Craft Workshop:
Experiments with Light

In conjunction with the Festive Tree Lighting event at the Dunbar Community Centre, Leah Weinstein invites community members of all ages to participate in a hands-on illuminated sculpture making workshop. The Working Holiday illuminated sculptures will be used to create a temporary installation in the Dunbar Community Centre lobby area.

Working Holiday: painting with light

An interactive, all weather event where the community is invited to try their hand at painting with light. This event will feature digital projections to animate the Community Centre in the lead up to the Tree Lighting Festival. Led by Jaspal Marwah. FREE
